The Security Department, under the Combat Tactics Officer, serves as an independent detachment/mobile unit under the direct command of the Captain.  It is responsible for internal security, as well as providing any needed tactical support in hostile territory.  Starship Security personnel are chosen from the finest of the Federation and the Marine Corps, and rotate between Starbase and starship postings.  At least one Assault Shuttlecraft is carried aboard most starships; this is equipped and modified for Landing/Boarding Assault missions - a Marine specialty.

Organization and Procedures

Department Deployment

The Security Department aboard most starships consists of ninety officers and enlisted men.  This is equally divided into three Sections, each of which is further divided into five Squads.  Normally, only one Section on-duty at any time is referred to as First Section, the one which will relieve it is Second Section, with the one which will relieve Second (and was just relieved by First) referred to as Third Section.

The usual officer division is on Lieutenant Commander, and five Lieutenants.  The senior officer is the Chief Security Officer, and as such is responsible to the Captain for his Department.  He is also in charge of a Duty Section, with on Lieutenant working under him.  As such, they coordinate the activities of their Security Section for every watch, assigning patrol and sentry duties.  Likewise there are two officers assigned to the Second and Third Sections.

Positions Commonly Found Within the Security Department

Chief Security Officer

In the Chief Security Officer role, his duty is to ensure the safety of ship and crew. The Chief of Security takes it as their personal duty to protect the Commanding/Executive Officer on away teams. He is also responsible for people under arrest and the safety of guests, liked or not. He also is a department head and a member of the senior staff, responsible for all the crew members in his department and duty rosters. Security could be called the 24th century police force.

Assistant Chief Security Officer

The Assistant Chief Security Officer assists the Chief of Security in the daily work; in issues regarding security/tactical and any administrative matters.

Security Officer

There are several Security Officers aboard of each vessel. They are assigned to their duties by the Chief of Security and his Deputy and mostly guard sensitive areas, protect people, patrol, and handle other threats to the Federation.

Brig Officer

The Brig Officer is a Security Officer who has chosen to specialize in a specific role. He guards the brig and its cells. But there are other duties associated with this post as well. He is responsible for any prisoner transport, and the questioning of prisoners. Often Brig Officers have a good knowledge of forcefield technology, and are experts in escaping such confinements.

V.I.P. Bodyguard

VIPs are sometimes difficult people to get along with. They want this and that, and want it as soon as they ask for it. So a VIP Bodyguard has not only to guarantee for the safety of the person he guards, but must also be good at organizing the requests from VIPs.

More than once he has to be diplomatic about what he has heard while staying in the vicinity of there VIP guests.

As with brig Officers, VIP Bodyguards are specialist Security Officers, and when not serving a VIP most Bodyguards partake in normal Security duties.

Master-at-arms

The Master-at-Arms trains and supervises Security crewmen in departmental operations, repairs, and protocols; maintains duty assignments for all Security personnel; supervises weapons locker access and firearm deployment; and is qualified to temporarily act as Chief of Security if so ordered. The Master-at-Arms reports to the Chief of Security.

-Officer Duties

During Condition 1 (analogous to Green Status for non-Security personnel), each Shift will see two officers and twenty-eight Security specialists on duty.  One of the officers will be designated as the Security Watch Officer.  He is responsible for coordinating the duties and functions of his Section smoothly and efficiently in real-time - handling any problems which may come up.  Normally he sits at the Bridge Internal Security Station.  From there he has access to all special intelligence and remote controls.  Also, he can interact and relay orders from the CO to his Section via intercom/communicator circuit.  The other on-duty officer is usually stationed in the Security Office Complex, where he can monitor the Armory and Brig.  As Assistant Security Watch Officer, he is also Armorer of the Watch, signing out and receiving all weapons at the start and end of his shift.

-Condition Status

Just as other officers and crewmen are controlled by the Alert Status, the Security Department is controlled by the Condition Status.  This is entirely independent of the Alert Status, and any Condition Status may co-exist with almost any Alert Status.

Condition 1: (Normal) First Section on-duty, Second and Third Sections off-duty.  Second Section reports to Security Office Complex one half-hour before change-of-watch (going on duty) for briefing.  Members of the First Section patrol or  stand at sentry posts singly as ordered.

Condition 2: Second Section joins First on duty.  All patrols and sentry posts double-up to two-man teams.  Third Section reports for duty one hour before change-of-watch.

Condition 3: Third Section dons Armor and goes on duty immediately.  First and Second Sections - in two-man teams - are directed by the Chief of Security to take up positions at the sensitive sentry posts.  Phasers are drawn and set for “stun”.  Third Section begins an extensive sweep patrol of the entire vessel, checking in at each sentry post.

Condition 4: (Isolation) The Chief of Security activates the Isolation force field doors, effectively cutting the ship into thirty isolated areas.  The Third Section - which is patrolling the ship in armored two-man Teams - can pass through the Isolation fields due to the force filed neutralizers built into their armor.  All other personnel must request permission from the Bridge - said request to be relayed by the sentries posted at the Isolation force field doors.  The Isolation fields can only be canceled from the Bridge Internal Security Station.  Phasers are drawn and set for “kill”.  Any order given to a sentry by any superior officer must be relayed to the Bridge for confirmation by the Captain.

Condition 5: (Evacuation) When all or part of the ship must be evacuated, Security specialists will begin a thorough sweep for personnel, removing same to safety
