About the Mir

Make use of the LCARS above to locate information on our command history

We are a group of Science Fiction enthusiasts who came together originally through a love of Star Trek.  We have, however, discovered that many of our members share a number of interests.  As a result, the Mir is a diverse group of friends who meet in a social atmosphere.

The Mir began as the Flight Team Nexus in April of 1995, when Captain John Baldwin and his wife, Linda LaSut moved to Las Cruces and found that there were no STARFLEET chapters near here.  After working hard to recruit 14 members, John and Linda launched the Shuttle Nexus from their mothership, the USS Trinity Dawn in Los Lunas, NM.  It seemed that the Mir was in for smooth sailing.  Recruiting continued and the membership continued to grow.  In January of 1996, Captain Baldwin hit a big roadblock to commissioning.  ShOC informed him that the USS Trinity Dawn had left SFI for the UFPI.  John was charged with finding a new mothership or risk having the Nexus dissolved having to start all over again.  John went to Sashi German, CO of the USS Thagard in Philadelphia, who agreed to take on the Nexus as one of their shuttles.  Safely under the wing of the USS Thagard, the Nexus completed its shuttle tour and commissioned as the USS Mir.  Although our paperwork would show January 31, 1996 as our commissioning date, we were not informed of our approval to commission until that June.  An event that was all too common during that time, as SFI was undergoing very trying times and entangled in a period of massive transition.  Traditionally, we celebrate our anniversary in June rather than January.  Our only regret was that John and Linda had to return back east very suddenly and were unable to attend the commissioning that they had worked so hard to achieve.

In May of 1998, Major Randy Lynch created the 875th MSG, a STARFLEET Marine Strike Group within the Mir.  Dubbed the "Screamin' Weazels," the 875th added a new level of activity on board the Mir.

In 2000, the Mir crew made their first trip to Colorado to meet other members of Region 17.  We quickly came to realize that there are many people out there as weird or even weirder than us.  Many of our members formed friendships that remain strong, despite considerable distance.

In June of 2002, the USS Mir took a big leap and hosted the Region 17 Summit in Las Cruces, NM.  We enjoyed an excellent turn out and raised a fair amount of cash for the regional treasury and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Now, we are in a period of transition.  We begin to phase away from all meeting events and toward more online and virtual events.  We do this to serve all of our members, near and far. On the Mir, everyone is essential!

Our goal is to get the politics out of the way of FUN!

While the crew of the USS Mir has weathered many difficulties, we have continued our mission.  With each new challenge, our members become stronger.  So the journey continues...
